Suriya has shared the untold story behind the powerful climax of ‘Karuppu’, revealing that the film’s most celebrated sequence was conceived and shot nearly six months after principal photography had wrapped. The actor recalled how director RJ Balaji came up with a new ending at the last minute and revealed that he drew inspiration from faith, praying to a Karuppaswamy statue on set before filming the emotionally charged scene that went on to become one of the biggest highlights of the blockbuster.
Suriya says RJ Balaji reworked the climax six months later
Delving into the unexpected decision during a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Suriya revealed that director RJ Balaji contacted him after the film had already been completed. “Because there wasn’t enough time, I had already transformed into my Vishwanath and Sons look—clean-shaven and everything. Suddenly, he said, ‘No, no, no… I’m not happy with the climax. I have an idea. Can we do this?'” the actor recalled.He said he was surprised by the request, because the production had wrapped months ago. “I was wondering, ‘How? When?’ After six months, after pack-up, the shoot was over, the edit was locked; this new idea suddenly came up. So we travelled from Hyderabad to Chennai in two days,” he said. The actor added that the team quickly reunited to film the revised ending, which eventually became one of the film’s standout moments.
Suriya drew inspiration from faith and real-life devotees
Suriya also shared how he prepared for the emotionally demanding climax. “Right behind the camera, there was a statue of Karuppaswamy. It had been part of a song sequence and was just a prop. I simply prayed to the statue and asked, ‘Please guide me. Come into me and guide me,'” he said. Explaining his performance, he added, “Across South India, and even in North India, where we call it Kuldevam or Kuldevta, people believe in ancestral gods. I’ve watched many YouTube videos where people surrender themselves during festivals. They believe God has entered them.”He further revealed, “In that trance, they speak prophecies. They believe the deity has possessed them and is speaking through them. Those videos became my small source of inspiration. I incorporated those emotions and movements into the performance.” Suriya also admitted, “There are certain faces that can unintentionally look funny when they open their eyes, and I was worried about losing the sincerity of the performance. But fortunately, it worked out.”

Directed by RJ Balaji, ‘Karuppu’ features a talented ensemble cast along with Suriya in the lead. The film has a good mix of action, emotion and strong cultural themes.
