Tom Cruise is back to save the world, but this time in a different way! The first look of Cruise’s upcoming dark comedy ‘Digger’ has been unveiled at an event in Las Vegas. The clip featured the action star in a completely unrecognizable look. The Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed film is set to release in the US on October 2, 2026.

On April 14, Cruise and Iñárritu unveiled the first footage of the upcoming dark comedy at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. According to Variety, before introducing the new trailer, Cruise said, “It took 40 years for me to be able to put on the boots of Digger Rockwell.”

In the dark comedy, the ‘Mission: Impossible’ star appeared with gray hair, a big tummy, and a southern accent. In the teaser footage, Cruise struts around his mansion and nurses his sick cat. It’s soon clear that Digger is the billionaire executive of a major company causing an environmental disaster via a methane leak that is threatening to displace millions of people.
The idea for ‘Digger’ has been up for nine years
‘Digger’ director Iñárritu explained that he first had the idea of Digger nine years ago, and has been talking to Cruise about it for the last seven years. “Watching Tom Cruise becoming Digger Rockwell, I was not prepared for that,” the filmmaker continued, adding that he was fearless from his stunts but “embodying this character, this is another kind of fearless… this role could be his most challenging, high-wire act.”

Cruise gushed over his collaboration with Iñárritu in return, saying this was “the kind of movie is why I wanted to make movies.” He added, “The movie is wild, it’s funny, and I can’t wait for you all to see it.”The film also stars Sandra Huller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.
