Producer Preeti Simoes has addressed how she’s often been boxed into the label of comedian Kapil Sharma‘s ‘ex-girlfriend’. In a recent interview, she reflected on how such labels tend to overshadow a woman’s professional achievements. She observed that even though both she and Sharma had moved forward with their respective lives, media narratives continued to link her identity to their alleged past romance. Simoes, who was the creative force behind Comedy Nights with Kapil and The Kapil Sharma Show, revealed that for a long time, she was identified merely as “somebody’s girlfriend” rather than being recognised for her professional contributions.

In an interview with Free Press Journal, “For the longest time, I was somebody’s girlfriend. Then, after we broke up and moved on with our separate lives, I became somebody’s ex-girlfriend in every headline. It had nothing to do with what I do. It was always ‘so-and-so’s ex-girlfriend’ or ‘so-and-so’s girlfriend.’ I don’t think the audience is really interested in that. I think it’s a section of the media that believes people will click only when you’re connected to a famous name”.

Simoes went on to express her frustration with how outsiders tend to assume things about the dynamic between two people. She explained that even when former partners choose to stay friends or maintain a cordial equation, people often assume the woman caused the breakup. “It’s very frustrating because nobody really knows what’s happening between two people. They could be very happy being friends, or they could simply be cordial with each other in a professional space. But the labels of ‘girlfriend’ and ‘ex-girlfriend’ continue forever. And if it’s a woman, the assumption is always, ‘She must have done something,'” she added.
