Then he reached a television performance that changed how he viewed magic. Today, he hopes that his experience will encourage other young people. The magic trick that scared him as a seven-year-oldAccording to his account published by Guinness World Records, his uncle Dessie once showed a trick that made it appear as though he had split his thumb in half before putting it back together. The trick left a young Cillian so frightened that he ran away, thinking that something similar might happen to his own thumb. In September 2024, Guinness World Records reported that he had performed 28 magic tricks in one minute, earning recognition for the most magic tricks performed in 60 seconds by a magician under 16. His performance included making a wand appear and making pencils disappear, alongside other quick illusions.Guinness World Records recorded O’Connor performing 35 successful magic tricks in one minute on October 30, 2024, in London, beating his own record. The achievement also earned him a place in the Guinness World Records 2025 book, in its Young Achievers section. His ambitions have taken him beyond record attempts. O’Connor finished third in the 2023 series of Britain’s Got Talent, according to Guinness World Records. He has also appeared on television programmes including Blue Peter, delivered a TEDx talk and become an ambassador for magic brand Marvin’s Magic. The company also recognised him with its Rising Star Award in Los Angeles. How magic helped him build a communityIn his profile for Guinness World Records, he explained that, when he was younger, he often knew what he wanted to say but struggled to express it. Discovering magic gave him a different way to approach interactions with people.Rather than relying entirely on conversation, he could use a card trick, an illusion or a surprising visual moment to engage an audience. The performance became a shared experience, creating an opportunity to connect with people through a skill he enjoyed. O’Connor has also said that magic helped him make friends with similar interests and travel to new places. His dream is to inspire other childrenO’Connor’s ambitions extend beyond television appearances and record books. He has expressed a desire to visit schools, share his experiences of autism and introduce children to magic as a way of encouraging interaction and self-expression. He has also spoken about the possibility of bringing magic into schools as a form of therapy someday. The records and television appearances make his story remarkable. But the more enduring message lies in what he hopes other children take from it: that they do not have to follow someone else’s path to discover what makes them special.
