Marjoe Gortner, who was once called a ‘miracle child’ at the age of four and became a preacher early in his career, has passed away. He was 82 years old at the time of his passing. Marjoe was also the inspiration behind the Oscar-winning documentary, ‘Marjoe.‘

Variety reported that his wife, Susan Magestro, confirmed the news that he left for his heavenly abode in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her statement also revealed that “Marjoe lived an extraordinary life, shaped by his imagination and rare gift for bringing people together,” the statement read.

Tributes pour in for Marjoe Gortner

Many people shared tributes online for the preacher, with actor Ian Ziering remembering the star for his philanthropic efforts. His statement read, “Marjoe Gortner was a force of nature. He became an evangelist in his teens and an actor in his young adulthood. His life story won an Oscar.” He added, “He brought celebrities all over the world to raise money for different charities … This man raised millions and millions of dollars for different charities while providing some of the most incredible celebrity experiences of my lifetime. I will never forget this man, and I will always be appreciative of not just what he did for me, but what he did for everyone who knew him.”Jennifer Tilly, actress and professional poker player, wrote a tribute for Gortner on X, sharing, “Rip Marjoe Gortner.” He was a very nice man. I used to attend all his celebrity ski tournaments for many years. He raised so much money for charity.” A fan of the former preacher and actor wrote, “R.I.P. Marjoe Gortner, star of some of our favorite ‘cheesy’ films. Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw (1976), Food of the Gods (1976), Starcrash (1978), Mausoleum (1983). Who was Marjoe Gortner

Marjoe Gortner was born on January 14, 1944, and was an American child evangelist, former preacher turned actor, and the main inspiration behind the 1972 Oscar-winning documentary ‘Marjoe.’ He was ordained at just four years old and was often called the ‘miracle child’ by his parents. From a young age, he started delivering sermons and performed faith healings. His parents used to travel with him across the country, preaching and soliciting donations from people. By the time Gortner turned 16 years old, his father absconded from the law with reportedly USD 3 million in donations.At age 27, he deferred from the evangelical career path and allowed a film crew to follow him on his final 1971 tour. He later turned to acting and appeared in several films over the course of his career in the industry.Some of his best-known films over the years include ‘Earthquake’ (1974), ‘Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw’ (1976), ‘Starcrash’ (1978), and ‘When You Comin’ Back, Red Ryder?’ (1979). He also appeared in a number of shows like ‘Kojak,’ ‘The A-Team,’ ‘Fantasy Island,’ and ‘Falcon Crest.’ Gortner was also known for his philanthropic work as well, where he produced celebrity sports charity events that raised millions of dollars.
