A Canadian family foundation has promised C$10 million (£5.5 million) to support hospital redevelopment projects in Mississauga. The donation will also create a dollar-for-dollar matching challenge, encouraging local residents to contribute to the projects.cThe donation from the Myhal Family Foundation will support the Built for Us campaign, a C$1 billion fundraising effort led by the Trillium Health Partners Foundation. Under the agreement, every donation made by members of the public will be matched dollar for dollar over the coming months. The money will help expand healthcare facilities across the region. According to an official announcement released by Trillium Health Partners Foundation on 29 October 2026, the funding will support several major construction and redevelopment projects across its hospital network. These include the new Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, and the expansion and redevelopment of The Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre.

A personal tribute to family legacy

For the family making the donation, the multi-million-dollar gift has a deeply personal meaning. It is linked to the care their family received from the hospital network. Rayla Myhal, President and Director of the Myhal Family Foundation, and her husband, George Myhal, made the donation in memory of Rayla’s late father, Mehraj Din. Din was a respected member of the local community. He received treatment at Trillium Health Partners hospitals and strongly supported charitable giving throughout his life. Family members said Din regularly encouraged people around him to give generously and help others. The foundation hopes to continue this belief by encouraging new donors to take part in the matching campaign. “I have seen what great care can mean to a family in its hardest moments,” Rayla Myhal said in statements published by the foundation. “George and I believe that when a community comes together, it can build something none of us could build alone. We hope this gift inspires others to join us, and that every person who gives knows their contribution matters.”

Driving the largest hospital expansion in Canada

The matching campaign comes as Trillium Health Partners begins what healthcare officials describe as the largest hospital redevelopment project in Canadian history. Trillium Health Partners is Canada’s largest community-based hospital network. It serves growing and diverse communities across Mississauga, West Toronto, and nearby municipalities. The hospital network has three main locations: Credit Valley Hospital, Mississauga Hospital, and the Queensway Health Centre. The expansion plans aim to replace older buildings with modern hospitals that can treat more patients and meet the expected population growth over the coming decades. The planned Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will replace the existing Mississauga Hospital building. The new facility will have significantly more beds for patients needing hospital treatment and expanded emergency services. At the same time, the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will provide special care facilities for children and mothers. It will include dedicated spaces for both inpatient and outpatient treatment. The redevelopment of the Queensway Health Centre will focus on expanding long-term complex care and rehabilitation services. This is expected to reduce pressure on emergency and other hospital wards across the wider network.

Matching challenge to mobilize new donors

By making the C$10 million donation a matching challenge starting on 29 October 2026, the Myhal Family Foundation hopes to encourage more people and groups to support the campaign. The fundraising effort is seeking donations from former patients who are grateful for their care, hospital employees, doctors, local businesses, and community volunteers. Healthcare leaders have stressed that donations from local communities play an important role in completing large public hospital projects. “Rayla and George have given our community something more than a gift. They’ve given us a catalyst that will further inspire support,” said Caroline Riseboro, President and Chief Executive Officer of Trillium Health Partners Foundation, in the press announcement. “Their gift means every donation, at every level, now goes even further in building hospitals that are truly built for us. We’re deeply grateful for their leadership, and I know this community will rise to meet it.”Hospital leaders also explained that public funding often depends on additional contributions from local communities. These donations help pay for specialised medical equipment and advanced features in hospital buildings. “We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine health care for our community and our country, creating a system that is more proactive, connected and personalized, and designed around the people it serves,” said Karli Farrow, President and Chief Executive Officer of Trillium Health Partners. “Communities build hospitals, and transformational generosity from families like the Myhals is helping us build a better, stronger future for health care. On behalf of Team THP, thank you to Rayla and George for helping bring that future to life.” The matching campaign will remain open to public donations through the hospital foundation’s online donation portal and community fundraising events.
