Employee under investigation for taking boss’ lunch asks HR ‘Why is it theft when I do it?’; claims manager took her food 3 times

Workplace disputes can become complicated when employees believe that rules are not being applied equally. A recent office incident has sparked an online debate about accountability, professional conduct and how HR should handle complaints involving colleagues. The disagreement has drawn attention after an employee challenged a disciplinary investigation and questioned whether her manager would face similar scrutiny.

Employee faces investigation over manager’s lunch

The incident came to light through screenshots shared by X user @Dreamtduusk. According to the messages, an HR representative named Rebecca informed an employee, Melissa, that she was being investigated for possible gross misconduct after allegedly taking her manager’s lunch from the staff refrigerator. The HR message referred to CCTV footage that reportedly showed Melissa taking the meal at 13:07 on Monday, October 5. It also stated that she had admitted to eating the food without permission.Melissa was asked to attend a disciplinary meeting on Friday, October 9, at 10 am.

Melissa claims manager took her food three times

Melissa argued that the incident could not be viewed in isolation. She alleged that her manager had taken her food from the refrigerator three times over two months, despite being asked to stop. She also claimed that she had warned the manager she would take her food if it happened again. Explaining her decision, Melissa wrote, “Yes, I ate my manager’s lunch. She has taken my food from the fridge three times over the last two months, despite me asking her not to. I told her if she took my food again, I’d take hers. So when I saw it in the fridge, I did. Why is it theft when I do it but not when she does it?”

Employee files formal grievance with HR

Rebecca maintained that the manager denied the allegations and said taking another person’s food without permission was unacceptable, regardless of previous disagreements.Melissa then filed a formal grievance, claiming she had attached messages in which the manager allegedly admitted to taking her food. She asked HR, “If I’m being investigated for taking one lunch, will my manager also be investigated for taking mine?”The screenshots do not establish whether the manager was investigated or whether either employee faced further disciplinary action.

Internet reacts to the lunch dispute

The incident prompted mixed reactions online, with users debating whether Melissa’s actions were justified and whether the manager’s alleged behaviour deserved equal attention. One user defended treating the incident seriously, writing, “Stealing or consuming someone else’s property, including a colleague’s meal, constitutes workplace theft and breach of trust, which qualifies as gross misconduct.”Another questioned the apparent difference in treatment, commenting, “Rules for thee, not for me energy. If the manager actually took her food multiple times, investigating only the employee looks messy.”Some users took a stricter view of the employee’s actions. One commenter wrote, “I’m ok with this. If someone is so degenerate they will steal a coworkers lunch, they ARE stealing much, much more in the real world too.”Another user commented, “Never seen someone eat their managers lunch.”The mention of CCTV footage also attracted attention. One commenter wrote, “Cctv in the fridge area is crazy but also she really said lunch theft is my legacy.”Another user argued that the manager’s alleged conduct should also be examined but maintained that it did not excuse Melissa’s actions. The commenter wrote, “It doesn’t matter that it’s happened to her. That should be investigated too but as it is, her theft is the thing being looked into at the moment. If you can steal people’s lunch at work you’ll do anything. Only a rat steals off hard working people. Much less their food.“Disclaimer: This article is based on user-generated content.
