National Award-winning actor Dhanush returned to his alma mater, Thai Sathya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Chennai, to inaugurate a new academic block he funded entirely. During the emotional event, the actor reunited with his teachers and classmates, while delivering a heartfelt speech on the importance of education and preserving one’s mother tongue. His remark that “it is a shame if you can’t read or write Tamil” has since gone viral, earning praise from fans and educators alike.

Dhanush delivered a heartfelt message on education and the importance of one’s mother tongue at the inauguration. “In my school days, I was weak in English but good at Tamil. Today, many students speak English well, but some cannot read or write Tamil. During the shoot of a French film, they asked me if I knew English. When I said yes, they were surprised and told me that English is only a bonus, but knowing your mother tongue is what truly matters. It is not a matter of pride if you don’t know Tamil; it is a shame,” he said.
Dhanush promises more support to his alma mater
The event showcased Dhanush’s deep roots at his alma mater, where he studied up to Class 10. Cinematographer A. Kumaran, a former classmate, revealed that Dhanush personally stepped up to fund the project after learning about the school’s infrastructure needs. Kumaran added that the actor has also committed to restoring older structures and building additional facilities moving forward. In a heartfelt gesture that resonated with everyone present, Dhanush paid homage to his former teachers by seeking their blessings and touching their feet.
