Money rarely becomes a relationship problem because of one expensive dinner or a shopping bill. More often, it is the small things couples keep avoiding: who pays for what, how much one person earns, whether there is debt, or what “saving for the future” actually means.

At the beginning of a relationship, these conversations can feel strangely uncomfortable. You may worry that asking about money will make things too serious, too soon.
