‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ is closing the gap with ‘Avatar‘ at the worldwide box office following the re-release’s impressive performance in its first week at the box office. The Marvel blockbuster has now hit approximately USD 2.9 billion worldwide, according to the latest reported figures, after the re-release added an estimated USD 100 million globally in its first week. This sets the film up to officially reclaim the box office crown from ‘Avatar’ which currently has a total box office collection of approximately USD 2.92 billion worldwide.
‘Avengers Endgame : Encore’ hits USD 2.9 billion mark
‘Avengers Endgame: Encore’ opened in cinemas on September 25 and collected USD 26 million domestically and USD 60 million internationally, for an impressive USD 86 million worldwide opening weekend. The re-release also became one of the biggest theatrical re-release openings of all time. The return to cinemas comes as Marvel Studios builds anticipation for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’, which is scheduled to arrive on December 18, 2026. The film drew in the masses as it reportedly included additional footage designed to connect the events of ‘Endgame’ with the upcoming ‘Doomsday’, including new mid-credit and post-credit sequences that linked the 2019 film to the upcoming release.
‘Avatar’ has benefited from multiple re-releases
The race to claim the box office crown is particularly notable because ‘Avatar’ has added substantially to its lifetime total through theatrical re-releases. The James Cameron-directed film was originally released in 2009 and later returned to cinemas in an extended version in August 2010. It was subsequently re-released in China in March 2021, adding nearly USD 58 million to its worldwide total and allowing it to regain the box office crown from ‘Endgame’.‘Avatar’ received another worldwide theatrical re-release in September 2022, ahead of the release of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’. That re-run generated approximately USD 76 million worldwide.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ records strong advance sales
The ‘Endgame’ rerelease is also helping generate momentum for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Disney CFO Hugh Johnston confirmed in September that the upcoming Marvel film had already generated more than USD 50 million in domestic advance ticket sales, despite being months away from its December 18 release.
