Also dubbed Dogwood, Steven Spielberg’s LA horse ranch property has suddenly become a mystery for many people, much like the multiple genres he likes to work with. The star director originally bought the place in 1999 and spent USD 5.75 million on it at the time. He also had a plan to build a five-story high-rise center on it as well. Last month, the 2.8-acre property went up on the market; however, it has now completely disappeared from the market. The asking price on the listing had been quoted at SD 29.9 million.

In 1999, Steven Spielberg bought a 2.8-acre horse ranch

The equestrian retreat located in Sullivan Canyon, Los Angeles, was once under the ownership of none other than Steven Spielberg, who is best known for his work in ‘Jurassic Park,’ ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,’ and ‘Schindler’s List,’ to name a few. While Steven Spielberg and his wife, Kate Capshaw, who owned the property for 27 years, maintained it for their horses and never actually lived in the main house, it has an extensive history of ambitious development, community pushback, and luxury real estate movements. The Los Angeles Times reported that in 2001, the filmmaker and his wife had an idea for a new development on the 2.8-acre property. Shortly after buying the space, the filmmaker submitted plans for a massive 27,000-square-foot, five-story riding facility that included a retractable domed roof, underground stables, a guesthouse, and a three-story guardhouse with estimated construction costs exceeding USD 7 million. While the project was quite ambitious and something that Spielberg really wanted to do, there was a lot of opposition to the project. Neighbors in the tranquil Sullivan Canyon voiced strong opposition to the size and scale of the proposed facility. In January 2001, the couple then completely withdrew their permit application and scaled down the development to an outdoor riding arena and standard facilities.

Key features of Steven Spielberg’s equestrian home

Some of the main features of the ranch included the riding arena the couple built instead of the five-story riding facility. The arena is a 20,000-square-foot riding ring that is well-equipped with an observation deck and a mirrored wall, which has been specially designed for jumping and dressage.Other than that, the property also has a main barn area, which features six horse stalls, grooming stations, a feed kitchen, storage areas, and staff quarters, as well as a lower parcel of land, which adds a second 4-stall barn, a ~5,400-square-foot turnout area, and a standalone one-bedroom guesthouse complete with a kitchen, rooftop deck, basement office, and storage. The main living residence in the space has seven bedrooms and nine and a half to 11 bathrooms. Some of the main amenities include dark wood-finish walnut flooring all across the home, along with high wood-beam ceilings, multiple wood-burning fireplaces, a chef’s kitchen opening to a terrace, a media/games room, a walk-in wine cellar, and a security command post.

Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw’s house makes it to the real estate market but then disappears soon after

In September this year, the equestrian house finally made its way to the real estate market. The couple listed the property for USD 29.9 million through agent Sandro Dazzan. By late October 2026, property records and MLS tracking revealed that the listing had been removed/withdrawn from the market, putting their sale plans on hold. As of right now, there are no details on what happened and why Spielberg backed down from selling the vast horse ranch.DISCLAIMER: Figures presented in this article are derived from various public sources and are considered approximate unless explicitly noted.
