For soldiers fighting in World War II, food was never simply about taste. It had to survive long journeys, extreme weather, rough handling and weeks away from a proper kitchen. Armies therefore developed rations that could be carried easily, stored for months and provide enough energy to keep soldiers moving. The result was a strange collection of canned meals, dense chocolate, biscuits, instant coffee and other foods that feel surprisingly familiar today. The US Army alone developed several specialised field rations, including the C, D and lightweight K rations. Here are six foods that became closely associated with soldiers’ wartime diets.
