The world of ‘Mirzapur’ is heading for a new chapter, this time on the big screen. After building a massive following across three seasons on streaming, the franchise is making the jump to theatres with ‘Mirzapur: The Film’. Pankaj Tripathi, who returns as the formidable Kaleen Bhaiya, believes the change in format will completely transform how audiences experience the much-loved story and its characters.
From private viewing to a shared theatrical experience
For years, ‘Mirzapur’ has largely been consumed at home, with viewers watching the series on screens of varying sizes and often immersing themselves in the story alone. According to Tripathi, the theatrical version brings an important change by turning that individual viewing experience into a collective one.Speaking to Hindustan Times, the actor shared, “The new thing about the film and you actually touched upon this in your question- is the scale. On OTT, you watch on screens ranging from 5 to 100 inches, but now you’ll be watching on a 25-to-28-foot screen. So, the major shift is that you get to see it on the big screen and experience it communally. Until now, watching on OTT was a solitary, private affair; now, you’ll be watching it with an audience.”The actor feels that watching a familiar universe alongside hundreds of other fans will add another layer to the franchise. The reactions inside a theatre, he believes, can alter the emotional impact of what is happening on screen.“Whenever a performance or art form is experienced communally, the impact changes entirely. Enjoying it in a group creates a unique, shared experience. So, while Mirzapur used to be a “leave me alone” kind of watch, it’s now in “party mode.” The world is the same, the characters are the same, but the story is new, and the experience is much grander,” he says.
A familiar world with a fresh story
While several recognisable characters are returning, the film is not simply expected to replicate what audiences have already watched on the streaming platform. The story revisits the roots of the conflict surrounding Kaleen Bhaiya and the Pandit brothers, played by Ali Fazal and Jitendra Kumar, while expanding the narrative for the theatrical format.Tripathi believes the scale is only one part of what makes the film different. The established characters and setting remain intact, but audiences will encounter a new story within that universe.

The actor has already begun working on the dubbing process and says the footage he watched during the sessions left him more enthusiastic about the release.“I was doing some dubbing work yesterday and really enjoyed what I saw. I even wondered, ‘Is it just because I’m part of the film that I’m enjoying it so much?’ So, I asked the makers, they’ve been with the project for ten months, whereas I was coming in to dub for the first time. Seeing it myself really ramped up my excitement; I can’t wait for the trailer to drop on the 11th,” he adds.His reaction also gave him reassurance that the theatrical adaptation has retained the essence of the franchise while offering something larger for its audience.

‘Mirzapur: The Film’ is directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna. The project is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, with Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar producing under the Excel Entertainment banner.Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani have co-produced the film.
