Psychology says parents who stay calm during tantrums help children learn emotional regulation

Tantrums can feel overwhelming in the moment, but they are a normal part of childhood- not a sign of bad parenting or a “bad” child. While parents can’t prevent every emotional outburst, they can influence how their child learns to deal with difficult feelings.

Over time, those repeated moments of patience and connection become the building blocks of emotional resilience, helping children grow into adults who can understand, express, and regulate their emotions in healthy ways.
